Here we go…

Day 3: Vintage Junk Journals

First off; you’re probably asking, “What ARE junk journals?” Well, to put it simply, they are blank journals that can be used as planners, day books, scrapbooks, trip journals, favourite things journals, baby books or whatever it is you think you could make in a blank book!
The catch; they aren’t always ENTIRELY blank. And that means you get to be creative. Put photos on those printed pages. Paint over them and write on your new canvas. Glue something to them. Add envelopes. You can do anything. And they’re oodles of fun.

So much fun that –as you can see– I’ve been busy making some. I’ve got a few sample pages here. The Little Golden Book covers also still hold the complete stories–along with some added pages for journalling or scrapbooking.
Here’s a look at a couple of the pages in the golden book journal:
The entire story is still here but with some journal pages in between the pages. Some pages are patterned. You can put photos on them or cover them and journal on them. Other ideas include adding envelopes and tuck spots to stick little notes or more photos in. You can decide if you want the entire story visible to be read.
Some of the pages are entirely blank, all ready for some journalling. But you can still use them for photos if you want. Junk journals are also great for lists. Do you write lists?
You may have noticed ome of the junk journals in the first photo are made with old Reader’s Digest Condensed Books. They have the most beautiful decorative covers that you don’t have to do anything to–unless of course you want to! That’s why I like gutting these books and turning them into journals. I also go through the pages I’ve removed because there are often some great images. Book pages are also pretty fun to make into envelopes and tags. Here’s a peek at a couple of the pages in one of the books. You’ll find full-size pages as well as partial pages, windows and tuck spots, pages from vintage books and ledgers and so much more.

I also make junk journals from “scratch”, using cardboard to create the book. Here’s one I made entirely from scratch.
Here’s a page from the little pink book you can see in the first photo in this post.

Notice how the page on the right flips outwards? Lots of little places for journalling and tucking things in.
Here’s one more page:
journal pages
Oooh. Looking makes ME want to write in it. Do you know anyone that would love a junk journal?
I think they’d make a super fun gift. And keep in mind, junk journals can be custom-made with a favourite book, or your own collection of papers, or old ephemera from Grandma’s house….you get it, right?

Anyway, junk journals truly are one of my favourite things. I love creating them. And I love filling them.  Check out these pages from a junk journal I completed recently.
As you can see, it’s just like scrapbooking. Except, I’d say it’s more freeing. That sounds bad for someone who SELLS scrapbook supplies, doesn’t it? But sometimes we get so caught up in the papers and the embellishments, we forget that what we’re really doing is telling the story, preserving the memories. When i “junk journal”, I tell the story. And I’m still using scrapbook supplies!
In the page above, you can see how I’ve added some photos, and lots of little notes. I also adhered some little Mexican-themed images I cut from brochures that I brought home. And there’s some bits of washi tape.
Again, on this page, I added photos. Before I adhered the photos I stamped some random imgaes on the plain background. I added letter stickers and even a quote I found somewhere. So easy. And fun!

Now it’s your turn. Do tell; what kind of scrapbooker are you? Could you work in a junk journal? Do you like or use any vintage supplies in your scrapbooks? And if you’d like to learn how to make your own junk journal, let me know!
